Super Bowl Parties: Miami Chic

Alrighty, here it is – the Make Merry! take on a sophisticated game day party. We designed our decor scheme to model Miami’s chic South Beach scene… modern elegant simplicity, luxurious-yet-comfortable details and subtle tropical elements. Then we added a few football-inspired details to keep it fun (and not take ourselves too seriously).

South Beach’s Delano Hotel made for the perfect inspiration. The public spaces of the Delano are open and airy, filled with floor-to-ceiling sheer white drapery, and decorated with natural elements and luxe accessories.

The gorgeous curtains make the Delano’s lobby iconic, but what I love is how the fun prints, tropical plants, lanterns and natural pots keep it comfortable and approachable. It’s a perfect example of how the luxurious and dramatic can also be “barefoot chic”.

Inspiration in hand, we developed a plan with these elements in mind: a white, green and brown palette with pops of orange and gold; tropical greenery and other natural materials; lanterns and candles; and a mix of tropical and football-inspired elements.

1 – Top the buffet table with a crisp white tablecloth, then add a runner of artificial turf (green felt would work as a substitue). Evenly space these long rectangular platters from Crate & Barrel to artfully mimic a football field’s yard lines.

2Referee whistles make cheap and easy favors.

3 – Place bunches of palm leaves in vases and on under platters on tables – you can find them dried at Save-on-crafts.com or pick them up at your local nursery, craft or home store.

4 – Fill terracotta and copper pots with wheatgrass.

5 – Gold-colored napkins make easy ‘penalty flags’ – I found mine at Home Goods (12 for $7.99).

6 -Accent your space with bright pops of color by using modern tropical printsthese pillows are from Crate & Barrel.

7 – These clever football coasters from Martha Stewart add a fun but subtle ‘theme’ detail.

8Banana leaf trays are perfect for serving appetizers and add another casual tropical element.

9Lanterns similar to the Delano’s can be found affordably at Jamali Garden… buying a bunch of them is a definitely investment, but they’re easily reusable for your home décor (and for future parties).

10 – Large monstera leaves are great for bringing the décor scheme to your walls.

So, what do you think? Are you geek or chic? Whatever you choose, we’ll be back tomorrow with the food and drinks – always the best part, right? – and one pretty fabulous treat you can make for the big game.
